Early life

Riley Green spent a considerable amount of time in the great outdoors during childhood. Coming from a Southern background and a very tight-knit environment, Green was heavily influenced by traditional country music and the importance of family and labor. His grandfather, Bufford Green, who ran the Golden Saw Music Hall, was largely responsible for inspiring Riley with musical ambitions. Prior to his career in music, Green was a well-rounded athlete and even played college football at Jacksonville State University. Career beginnings

Green released a self-titled EP in 2013, followed by additional EPs in 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2018, he signed with Big Machine Label Group. He released his debut single “There Was This Girl” on August 6, 2018. Taste of Country’s Billy Dukes reviewed the song favorably, saying that its theme was similar to “Chicks Dig It” by Chris Cagle and that there was more of a neotraditional country influence than Green’s peers. The song was a commercial success, reaching number one on several country music charts including Country Airplay in April 2019.

Green announced in April 2019 the release of his second single, “In Love by Now”, which he co-wrote with Rhett Akins, Ben Hayslip and Marv Green. An accompanying music video was also released, which was shot in Belize.”I Wish Grandpas Never Died” was released in August 2019 as the third single from Green’s debut album Different ‘Round Here. The album was released on September 20, 2019. The Academy of Country Music crowned Green as the New Male Artist of the Year for 2019. Green toured as direct support on Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen’s major stadium tours in 2022 and 2023. He co-wrote a song on Justin Moore’s 2023 album, “Stray Dog.” Green released his second studio album Ain’t My Last Rodeo on October 13, 2023. The album included a re-recording of “Different ‘Round Here” as a duet with Luke Combs.

Controversies

The controversy arose around Green when he made reference to Confederate General Robert E. Lee in his song titled “Bury Me in Dixie.” Green removed the song from all streamable platforms in October 2019. In regards to why he referred to Robert E. Lee in his song lyrics, Green said it wasn’t to make any racial statements but rather to show pride and heritage for what he had grown up around. He added that his reason for removing the song was not to avoid a controversial situation but to address poor sound quality.
